Dolores Avery, the mother of Steven Avery, who was at the centre of the Netflix documentary series Making A Murderer, has died.

Dolores, who also appeared in the docu-series, was 83 years old.

Steven’s attorney, Kathleen Zellner, made the announcement in a statement, saying that her client had been ‘dealt another cruel blow’.

‘Update: Fate dealt another cruel blow to Steven Avery today right before his birthday tomorrow; his mother Dolores Avery passed away at 6:50 am,’ she tweeted.

‘He needs your support now more than ever. RIP Ma Avery .’

Steven’s brother Earl reportedly told TMZ that Dolores had been looked after in hospice care for the three weeks leading up to her death.

The elderly woman, who had dementia, last spoke to Steven around eight or nine months ago, Earl said according to the publication.

Dolores died just one day before Steven’s 59th birthday on Friday July 9.

In 2007, Steven was given a life sentence after being convicted of killing photographer Teresa Halbach two years previously.

He had previously served 18 years in prison for the wrongful conviction of sexual assault and attempted murder of Penny Beerntsen.

Kathleen has been Steven’s attorney for the past five years, recently campaigning for the court to hear let new witnesses speak on her client’s case.
