Warning: spoilers ahead for The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 episode 2.

The latest episode of The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 sees Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) receive unexpected, miraculous news as June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) launches a Mayday attack in Gilead.

After being taken in by the teenage Mrs Esther Keyes (Mckenna Grace) with several other Handmaids, June now has some of her fighting spirit back, after nursing an agonising gunshot injury.

The trespassing of a Guardian on Mrs Keyes property in episode one made June realise that she and the other Handmaids need to be on the move again soon – but not before seeking revenge on a group of unwitting Commanders.

Meanwhile in Canada, Serena and her husband Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) are not on good terms while they remain in custody.

However, all of that could change after Serena makes a startling discovery.

June launches Mayday at Jezebels before capture

As the de-facto leader of the escaped Handmaids, June is the one who makes contact with a woman working at a Jezebels called Daisy who organises for the group to move to a new safe house.

But before they make the move, June and Daisy – with the help of Mrs Keyes – carry out a mission to poison the Commanders at the brothel.

When June returns back to Mrs Keyes farm at night, she realises that something isn’t right, as all of the lights are on.

Her escort is shot by an unseen sniper, before June realises that multiple snipers are being pointed in her direction.

As she tries to reach for a gun, Commander Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) emerges from the shadows, whispering to June that he’ll do his best to keep her safe.

However, he can’t change the fact that she has now been captured and – in accordance with Gilead law – will likely receive horrific punishments for her crimes.

Aunt Lydia is desperate to deliver punishment

If anyone knows how to inflict pain, it’s Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd).

Despite evidently being beaten herself after the escape of the Handmaids and a plane-full of children from Gilead, Aunt Lydia tells a panel of Commanders at a hearing that she wants nothing more than to be the one to punish June for the role she played.

Now that June has been captured, it looks like Aunt Lydia is going to get her wish.

Serena receives miraculous news

Throughout The Handmaid’s Tale, Serena Joy has lamented the fact that she cannot bear a child, resenting her former Handmaid June, whose duty it was to provide her and her husband Fred with a baby.

Having been arrested in Canada with her husband after reuniting with Nichole, June’s daughter with Nick who Serena regards as her own, Serena receives some unexpected news.

Serena and Fred are at odds with one another, after Fred informed the US authorities of the crimes his wife committed in Gilead.

As Serena approaches US government official Mark Tuello (Sam Jaeger) to tell him that she wants to be separated from Fred, he tells her that after her medical exam, it has been discovered that she is pregnant.

Not only does this news come as a huge shock to Serena, but it could have huge repercussions for the rest of the series, perhaps even resulting in her reconciling with her husband.

Plus, will Serena still try to bring Nichole back into her life now that she has her own child on the way’?

The Handmaid’s Tale returns next Sunday at 9pm on Channel 4.
