Love Island 2021 Jake Cornish has revealed that he applied for the show after going through a ‘heartbreaking’ breakup during lockdown.
The 24-year-old admitted that the end of a seven-year relationship with his ex-girlfriend motivated him to sign up for the dating show earlier this year.
Jake, a water engineer from Weston-super-Mare, said the problems with dating during the pandemic urged him on to take part in the hit series.
Speaking about the relationship, he told The Mirror: ‘We just fell out of love, to be honest. We were together for so long. But there is no bitterness, none of that.
‘I would be lying if I said I wasn’t heartbroken when we broke up, but everything happens for a reason at the end of the day.’
Jake added: ‘I signed myself up for the show. I was in lockdown and I was lonely, I guess. I couldn’t just go out and meet girls so I thought now is the perfect time to apply for Love Island.’

When asked if viewers could be seeing his ex-girlfriend in the villa, Jake said he’d be very surprised.
‘It didn’t end sour or anything. But I don’t know if I could see it happening. She’s got a boyfriend now, so I wouldn’t like to think that could happen. I would be a bit worried really.’
Jake is one of 11 contestants kicking things off in their quest to find love tonight – and the girls were the first to arrive in newly released footage.
Sharon Gaffka, Liberty Poole, Shannon Singh, Kaz Kamwi, Chloe Burrows and Faye Winter all make themselves at home in the footage, joined by presenter Laura Whitmore.
The upcoming season will make history with Hugo Hammond becoming the first-ever disabled contestant to appear on the dating show after bosses said the programme will feature its most diverse line-up yet.
Love Island airs tonight at 9pm on ITV2.
